Diving Information

There are three different levels to Playa del Carmen’s reef system. Meaning we have three different levels of reef heading towards el cantil (cliff). Playa del Carmen’s reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef system in the world.

Our reefs differ from Cozumel’s in that due to currents, the nutrients tend to pool on this side, meaning our visibility isn’t quite as crystal clear as Cozumel’s, however the upside of this is that we have many more fish!

Depths vary between a colorful 5 m/16ft to a respectable 30m/98ft, with visibility going from over 40m/130ft during the period of April to October to around 25m/80ft for the rest of the year. We enjoy an amazing amout of light at depth because of the water's clarity. The sea’s temperature seldom drops below 27º C/80º F. 3mm short wetsuits are the normal exposure protection for ocean dives. Cavern divers use 5mm full suits and thicker in the 24º C/75º F cenotes.

All of the dives here in Playa del Carmen are drift dives. Our boat drops us off at the dive site and picks us up where we surface. Drift dives can be very relaxing as you let the current take you along only using your fins to direct you.
So jump in the water and enjoy the scenery!
